A system that satisfies the thermostat and stops is not short cycling. Short cycling is a start and a stop on a loop of a few minutes, with the house still far from the setpoint. Write down roughly how long it runs. “A few minutes” and “it reaches the setpoint and waits” are different jobs.
On a gas furnace, a packed filter or a blocked return can trip the limit. The burners shut off, the blower may keep running, and then the cycle starts again. That check comes before anyone condemns a heat exchanger. The sequence is also on furnace not turning on. On an air conditioner, a coil that ices, a low refrigerant charge, or a thermostat in the sun or in a supply draft can shut the outdoor unit down early. Cooling that runs and still cannot hold the house is AC can’t keep up, which is not always short cycling.
Oversized equipment can short cycle. We will not declare that from a phone call. It takes the house and the equipment, not a runtime guess. A thermostat location problem is cheaper to confirm: a stat in afternoon sun, or one sitting in the blast from a supply register, will satisfy itself and leave the rest of the house alone.
Symptoms and how they’re checked
No price column. Quoted after the cause is known.
| Symptom | Likely cause | How it’s checked |
|---|---|---|
| Furnace burners light, then shut off, and the blower keeps going | Limit switch from low airflow | Filter, return grilles, and a blower door that is actually closed. |
| Thermostat is satisfied while other rooms are not | Stat in the sun, or in a supply draft | Where the thermostat is, and whether that spot is hotter or colder than the house. |
| Air conditioner runs a few minutes and the outdoor unit stops | Iced coil, refrigerant, or a safety switch | Indoor coil, outdoor unit, and whether the suction line is iced. Not a guess over the phone. |
| Both heat and cool short cycle the same day | Thermostat or a control problem, not a seasonal filter story | Mode, setpoint, and whether the stat clicks off while the room is still far from the setting. |
| It runs, reaches the setpoint, and waits | Normal cycling | Not a repair by itself. A house that never reaches the setpoint is a different complaint. |
Name, mobile phone, and ZIP are required. Street address can wait. We follow up the same business day by phone or email. That is a callback, not a promise of a repair the same day.
