Furnace Not Turning On?

A Tucson furnace can sit from April until the first cold night and then do nothing. The sequence you hear is the useful clue. A gas smell is not a clue to keep testing.

Most Tucson gas furnaces do not run for months. Dust settles, a filter loads up, and the hot-surface igniter that worked last winter is the part that fails on the first call for heat. The longer description of that season is on furnace repair. This page is the narrower question: the furnace will not turn on, or it will not stay on.

If you smell rotten eggs, stop. Leave the house, do not use switches, and call 911 or Southwest Gas. The form on this page is not an emergency line. A carbon monoxide alarm is the same kind of stop: the steps and the official pages are on carbon monoxide safety.

Symptoms and how they’re checked

No price column. A firm number comes after the equipment is seen. We do not publish a Sabino Creek part price here.

Nothing at all when the thermostat calls for heatThermostat mode, a tripped breaker, an open blower door, or no call reaching the furnaceHeat, not Off or Cool. Setpoint above the room. One breaker reset. The door has to be on for the switch to close.

Burners light for a few seconds and drop outFlame sensor not proving flameThe flame is real and the valve closes. Cleaning or replacing the sensor is the usual repair.
Heat starts, then the burners shut off while the blower runsLimit switch from a packed filter or blocked returnFilter and return grilles before anyone condemns the heat exchanger.
Burners stay lit and the blower never startsBlower motor, capacitor, or the board’s fan outputThe blower is supposed to wait until the heat exchanger is warm. If it never starts, that wait is over.

A light dusty smell on that first fire is covered on heater smells burning. Repeated clicking with no flame is a reason to stop resetting and send the form. The seasonal pass, if the furnace still runs and you want it checked first, is the printable checklist and the heating tune-up.

Furnace not turning on

What if I smell gas?

Leave the house. Do not flip switches or light anything. Call 911 or Southwest Gas. Do not wait on a callback inside the house.

Is a furnace that does nothing always a bad board?

No. Heat mode, a setpoint above the room, a tripped breaker, and a blower door that is not closed are the first checks. The board is what you look at after those are ruled out.

Why did it light and then quit?

A flame sensor that does not prove flame is the usual reason the valve closes after a few seconds. That is a repair, not a reason to assume the heat exchanger is finished.

Should I keep resetting it?

One breaker reset is enough. If it trips again, leave it off. Repeated ignition tries with a gas smell are not a test.

Is this the same as a tune-up?

No. A tune-up is for a furnace that still runs. No heat, or heat that starts and dies, is a repair visit.

How fast is the callback?

We typically follow up the same business day. That is not an overnight dispatch line and it is not a promise of a repair the same day.
