Before the First Cold Night

The first cold night is when a furnace or heat pump that sat since spring gets asked to work. A ten-minute check the evening before is calmer than a no-heat morning.

Set the thermostat to Heat, not Emergency and not Cool, and put the setpoint a few degrees above the room. Listen. An inducer and then burners is a gas furnace. An outdoor unit that starts is a heat pump. Nothing at all is furnace not turning on or a heat pump that is not heating, depending on which machine you have.

Look at the filter before you need the system. A filter that loaded up through a long cooling season will choke the first heating call. If Emergency Heat is still selected from an old habit, switch it back to Heat unless the outdoor unit will not run. That mode is explained on emergency heat.

A light dusty smell that fades can be dust on a heat exchanger that sat all summer. The longer note is heater smells burning. A rotten-egg smell is not dust. Leave, do not use switches, and call 911 or Southwest Gas. If the system still runs and you want it checked before you depend on it, the visit is a heating tune-up. The printable pass is the season checklist.

First cold night

When should I try the heater?

Before the morning you need it. A short test on a mild evening tells you whether it lights or whether the outdoor unit starts.

What if I smell something burning?

A light smell that fades can be dust. A rotten-egg smell means leave and call 911 or Southwest Gas. The burning-smell page separates those.

Is Emergency Heat the right setting for a cold night?

No, unless the heat pump will not run. Heat is the mode that uses the outdoor unit.

Is this the same as a tune-up?

No. This is what you can confirm yourself. A tune-up is a visit when the system still runs and you want it checked.

What if I am coming back to an empty house?

Use the snowbird startup page. Do not assume a system that sat all summer will start cleanly.

How do I ask for a visit before it gets cold?

Choose Tune-up on the form, or call (520) 329-1252. We follow up the same business day.
