Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air?

A heat pump’s supply air is warmer than the room, not furnace-hot. Cold air that never warms the house is a different problem than a system that is just slower than a gas furnace.

The longer page is heat pump repair. This one is the narrower complaint: the thermostat says heat, and the air at the register feels cold. On a mild Tucson morning a working heat pump can feel cool on your hand and still be raising the room temperature. Give it a little time before you decide it is broken. If the room is not moving after that, the outdoor unit is the next clue.

Defrost is normal. The outdoor coil ices, the system briefly sends cooler air inside, then it goes back to heat. That pass should end. Ice that stays on the outdoor unit, or cold air that never stops, is not a finished defrost. Emergency Heat is a different mode: on many thermostats it runs the electric strips and leaves the outdoor unit off. If Emergency is still selected from last night, switch it back to Heat unless the outdoor unit will not run.

A rotten-egg smell is not a heat-pump airflow problem. Leave, do not use switches, and call 911 or Southwest Gas. A carbon monoxide alarm is the same stop. Those steps are on carbon monoxide safety.

Symptoms and how they’re checked

No price column. A firm number comes after the equipment is seen.

Cold air from a heat pump

Is cool air from a heat pump always a failure?

No. Heat-pump supply air is warmer than the room and cooler than a gas furnace. If the room temperature is rising, it may be working. If the room is not rising, it needs a diagnosis.

What is a normal defrost?

The outdoor unit pauses heating, may send cooler air inside for a few minutes, and then returns to heat. Ice that never clears is not a finished defrost.

Should Emergency Heat stay on?

No. Emergency Heat is for a heat pump that will not run. Left on, it keeps the outdoor unit off and heats with electric strips. Switch back to Heat once the outdoor unit can run.

Could the thermostat just be on Cool?

Yes. Check Heat, not Cool or Off, and set the temperature above the room. Thermostat mode is the first check on the thermostat page.

Is this the same as a furnace problem?

No. A gas furnace that will not light is a different sequence. Use the furnace-not-turning-on page if you have a gas furnace and no outdoor unit running in winter.
