Ductwork Problems in a Tucson Attic

A new condenser does not fix a duct that pulled apart in a 140-degree attic. Weak rooms, a system that runs all afternoon, and air coming from a closet ceiling are duct clues.

Tucson attics are hot enough to soften the jacket on a flex duct and to open a joint that was only held by a zip tie. The room at the end of that run never quite cools, or never quite heats, while the thermostat in the hall is satisfied. The longer version of the attic problem is ducts and attic heat. This page is the repair question.

Tucson Electric Power lists duct sealing at up to $300, varying by how much leakage is reduced, on tep.com/efficient-home-program as that page read on October 15, 2026. The rebate requires a participating contractor. It is not a price for a repair, and we are not stating that Sabino Creek is on TEP’s contractor list. The figures and the rule are repeated on TEP rebates.

Symptoms and how they’re checked

No repair price column. The only dollar figure near this topic is TEP’s duct-sealing rebate, and it is not an invoice.

SymptomLikely causeHow it’s checked
One room never cools or heats, and the rest of the house is fineA disconnected branch, a closed damper, or a crushed runAttic inspection of that branch, the boot, and the damper. The thermostat cannot see a duct that is off.
The system runs all afternoon and the house still climbsLeaky attic ducts, a dirty filter, or equipment that is not keeping upFilter first, then supply temperatures and whether air is escaping in the attic. Capacity is a separate question from a hole in a duct.
Air or dust from a ceiling or a closet that should be closedA boot loose at the drywall or a return that is open to the atticFind the leak at the ceiling, not by adding refrigerant.
New outdoor unit, same hot roomsThe ducts were not part of the replacementThe new equipment is moving air into the same attic losses. See the attic-heat guide before you replace anything else.
Whistling and weak airflow after several vents were closedHigh static from too many closed suppliesOpen the registers and retest before anyone modifies the duct size.

A room that is hot while the vents in that room are barely moving air is the pattern on AC can’t keep up when the equipment is running and the house still climbs. Say which rooms fail when you use the form.

Duct questions

Is a hot upstairs always the ducts?

No. A closed damper, a weak return, an undersized system, or a coil that is iced over can do the same thing. The attic is where a disconnected run shows up. It is not the only cause.

What does TEP pay for duct sealing?

Tucson Electric Power’s Efficient Home page lists duct sealing up to $300, varying by leakage reduced, as of October 15, 2026. That is a rebate for qualifying work by a participating contractor. It is not a Sabino Creek repair price. Read tep.com/efficient-home-program and our TEP rebates page.

Should I close vents in empty rooms?

Closing most of the supplies makes the remaining ducts noisier and can ice a coil or trip a heating limit. It is not a fix for a missing branch.

Do flex ducts fail in this climate?

Attic heat and a sagging run are a common pair. A joint that was never sealed, or a duct pulled off a boot, shows up as a room that never conditions. The check is in the attic, not from the thermostat.

Is duct cleaning the same as duct repair?

No. Cleaning does not reconnect a fallen branch or seal a ripped jacket. Say whether you are seeing dust, a dead room, or both.

How do I ask for a look?

Use the form with the ZIP and which rooms fail. Street address can wait. We follow up the same business day.
