How to Check an Arizona HVAC Contractor License

The Arizona Registrar of Contractors keeps the license record. An ad that says licensed is not that record.

Use the Registrar’s own search. The contractor search is at azroc.my.site.com/AZRoc/s/contractor-search. ROC points people there from roc.az.gov/before-hire and from roc.az.gov. If the search is confusing, ROC says to call 1-877-692-9762. Customer service hours listed on roc.az.gov are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  1. Open the Contractor Search. You can search a license number, a business name, or both. ROC says no field is mandatory.
  2. License numbers are 6 digits. ROC’s instructions say to include a leading zero, so a number written as 1234 is searched as 001234.
  3. For a person’s name, ROC says to use first name then last name, for example “John Doe,” not “Doe, John.” Commas and apostrophes are not required.
  4. Click Search. Advanced Search can narrow by city, license classification, and status. Pick the classification that matches the work. ROC’s before-you-hire page says to make sure the license class allows the work in the contract, and to call the ROC License Department if you are not sure.
  5. Read the record before you sign. ROC says to confirm the person you are dealing with is an authorized representative by calling the phone number on the license record, and to check that the license is current.

ROC also says an advertisement is not proof. On the before-you-hire page, the agency says that except for workers’ compensation insurance, it does not require insurance for a license, and that “licensed, bonded, and insured” in an ad has to be checked against the record. The only sure check the agency describes is the search or a call to the Registrar.

Sabino Creek does not publish a license number on this site. The request form says your details may be shared with a licensed local HVAC or plumbing contractor so they can contact you. Before work starts, look that contractor up with the steps above. We are not stating a license status, and we are not telling you the result of a search we did not run.

The same search is how you check a plumber. ROC’s classification list describes R-37 Plumbing, Including Solar for residential water and gas piping, fixtures, and sewers, and CR-37 Plumbing as the dual commercial-and-residential class. Pick the class that matches the work. Plumbing requests on this site are explained on the plumbing hub. Sabino Creek does not perform that work.

The form on this page does not look up a license. Name, mobile phone, and ZIP are required. We follow up by phone or email.
