Heat Pump Emergency Heat

Emergency Heat is a mode, not a diagnosis. On many thermostats it locks the system onto electric strips and does not run the outdoor heat pump.

Use Emergency Heat when the outdoor unit will not run and you need heat from the strips until someone looks at the heat pump. Leave it there and the outdoor unit stays off. The strips then carry the whole house. That is a lot of electric resistance heat for a desert night that a working heat pump could have handled. Switch back to Heat after the outdoor unit is able to run.

Auxiliary heat during a defrost is not the same switch. The heat pump ices, it defrosts, the strips may come on so the house does not go cold, and then they should turn off. A few minutes of “aux” on the thermostat can be that cycle. Aux that never clears, or Emergency that someone selected on the first cold night and forgot, is the thing to change or to report.

Cold air while Emergency is on means the strips are not heating. That is a repair, not a reason to keep toggling modes. The outdoor-unit side of a cold-air complaint is heat pump blowing cold air. Thermostat labels differ by brand; a photo of the screen helps. More thermostat checks are on thermostat problems.

Symptoms and how they’re checked

No price column. We are not publishing a cost per hour for electric strips.

Emergency heat questions

What does Emergency Heat do?

On many thermostats it runs the electric heat strips and does not run the outdoor heat pump. It is for a heat pump that will not heat, not for every cold morning.

Is auxiliary heat the same thing?

Not always. Auxiliary heat often comes on by itself during a defrost and then turns off. Emergency is a mode a person selects.

Should I leave Emergency Heat on overnight?

Only if the outdoor unit will not run. If the heat pump can run, Heat is the mode that uses it.

Why is the air still cold on Emergency?

The strips are not heating. Check the breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and ask for a repair.

Does a dual-fuel system use Emergency Heat?

A dual-fuel system uses the gas furnace when it is cold. Emergency Heat is the strip mode on a heat pump that does not have that furnace call. The dual-fuel page explains the difference.

How do I ask for service?

Say whether the screen shows Heat, Aux, or Emergency, and whether the outdoor unit runs. Call (520) 329-1252 or use the form.
