A replacement proposal in the thousands of dollars should be comparable to another proposal. Often it is not, because one quote is a condenser and the other is a condenser, a coil, a line set, and a return drop. Sabino Creek Heating & Cooling will look at a quote you already have and say what we would want to verify. That request is free. It is not a promise that the number goes down.

What to pull out of the quote

  • The equipment: outdoor model, indoor coil or air handler, and whether they are a matched pair.
  • Efficiency rating, if it is stated, and the tonnage.
  • Duct work, line set, thermostat, pad, disconnect, and haul-away: included or extra.
  • Any rebate, and whether it is written as conditional. TEP’s current amounts are on the TEP rebate page, not inside someone else’s total.
  • Permit and who pulls it.

Questions worth asking whoever wrote the quote: what happens if the line set is the wrong size, whether the indoor coil is staying, and what the price becomes if the ducts leak. Sizing is not the square footage of the house. That mistake is common enough to have its own page, what size AC a Tucson home needs. The repair-or-replace fork, before you accept that the system must go, is repair or replace. Published national ranges for context, not as a target price, are on new AC cost.

Put the description in the form. If the cooling is already off, say that in the urgency field and read what to do when the AC quits.

Second opinion questions

Is the second opinion free?

Yes. The request is a free, no-obligation estimate. You are not agreeing to buy a system by sending the form.

Do I have to upload the quote?

No. Describe it in the details box: the total, the equipment, and what is included. There is no file upload on this form.

What is a red flag in a quote?

One bottom-line number with no model numbers, no note about the indoor unit, and no statement of whether ducts or electrical work are included. A rebate written in as if it were already approved is another.

Will you tell me the other company is wrong?

We will tell you what we would check and what a repair versus a replacement looks like on the information you send. We do not invent a cheaper price to win the call.

What if the system is actually broken right now?

Say so, and mark the urgency. A second opinion on a proposal can wait a day. A house with no cooling in a heat wave should use the emergency page.

Can I ask about a TEP rebate at the same time?

Yes. Check “Ask about TEP rebate eligibility.” A rebate still requires a participating contractor and a qualifying job. See the TEP page.
