Mature trees help the roof and do nothing for a crushed flex duct in the attic or a return buried behind a bookcase. One or two rooms that fall behind, with cool air in the rooms next to the air handler, is a duct and airflow story: ducts and attic heat and AC can’t keep up. Warm air at every vent is not that story. Equipment from these decades also hits the age where a major part starts a replacement conversation. Age is still not a rule. Read repair or replace before you approve a system from the age of the block wall. If the path is new equipment, AC installation and sizing come before a tonnage picked off the old nameplate. Dust still finds these coils. The neighborhood is built up, and the washes and the open lots toward Marana are not. A system that faded after a storm belongs with monsoon dust until the coil and the filter are ruled out. Names on the sticker — R-22 on the oldest equipment, R-410A on most replacements — are explained on refrigerants. You do not have to replace a system because the sticker says R-22. You do have to stop pouring a different refrigerant in because someone called all of it Freon.
