Package Unit AC in Tucson

One outdoor cabinet, with supply and return both tied to it, is a different machine from a condenser in the yard and an air handler in a closet.

A package unit puts the cooling coil, the compressor, the blower, and often the heat in one cabinet. Both ducts, supply and return, connect to that box. There is no indoor air handler to stand in front of, which is why people swear the house “does not have a filter” until someone opens a slot on the cabinet. Split systems are the other layout: condenser outside, furnace or air handler in a closet, refrigerant lines between them. The symptom list can look identical. Warm air, a dead fan, ice, or water still starts with the thermostat and the filter. The machine you are describing is not identical, and the form should say so.

You will see these on flat roofs, on the ground beside single-story block houses, and at manufactured homes. Manufactured homes have their own constraints: smaller ducts, specific cabinets, and a bad outcome if someone upsizes the box past the ducts. Green Valley has a lot of ground-level package units on site-built houses as well. That is a different housing stock from a Sahuarita production home with a split heat pump. The town page is Green Valley HVAC. Cooling repairs aimed at those cabinets are Green Valley AC repair. A swamp cooler on the roof is yet another machine, with water and pads, on swamp cooler repair.

Filters still exist. Coils still load with dust. Condensate still has to leave, sometimes at the cabinet rather than through an attic. If the only access is a roof, say that. Do not climb a tile or a flat roof to “just look.” Water at the cabinet is still condensate until someone shows otherwise. It is not automatically a refrigerant leak. Repair context that applies after the layout is known is AC repair, including the HomeAdvisor table already published there. This page adds no new prices.

Replacing a rooftop cabinet can involve lifting equipment. We will not promise a crane, a crew, or a swap on any particular day. Sabino Creek does not perform the work and does not own the equipment. A request may be shared with an independent contractor who can say whether the cabinet is serviceable where it sits. Permits, if a replacement is the real topic, are pointed to from HVAC permits without a fee list.

Choose AC not cooling, No heat, or Replacement quote if you already know the cabinet is done. Say roof, ground, or manufactured home, and the ZIP. The form asks for a follow-up. It does not reserve a crane.

Questions about package units

One cabinet, filters, and what we will not promise about a swap.

How do I tell a package unit from a split system?

A package unit is one large cabinet with both supply and return ducts connected to it. A split system has a condenser outside and a separate air handler or furnace indoors. If you only see one box and no indoor closet unit, say package.

Are package units only on mobile homes?

No. Manufactured homes use them often, and so do a lot of site-built houses in Green Valley, on flat roofs, and in older tracts. The mobile-home page is for the house type. This page is for the machine.

The filter is not in a hallway. Where is it?

Often behind a panel on the cabinet itself. If you cannot find it, say that. Do not remove panels you cannot put back.

Can you swap it the day I call?

No. Sabino Creek does not perform the work, does not own a crane, and does not promise a replacement on any schedule. A request may be shared with an independent contractor.
