No hot water is the symptom. The repair page is broader. People search the symptom when the shower is already cold, and the useful first split is simple: is every faucet cold, or only one, and is the water cold from the first second or warm for a few minutes and then gone? One bathroom that never gets hot, while the kitchen is fine, points at that faucet or a mixing valve, not at a dead tank. A whole house that fades halfway through a shower points at a tank that is not recovering, which is a different sentence on the form.
You can look without opening anything. On a gas tank, a status light or a small display in a window is sometimes visible with the cover still on. If you already know where the gas shutoff for that appliance is, and you can see that the handle is across the pipe, say so. Do not go looking for a valve you have never used, and do not open the burner compartment to watch a pilot. On an electric tank, a tripped breaker is something you can see at the panel if you know which breaker it is. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off. Electric elements and thermostats are not a homeowner project in a wet closet.
Tankless units fail differently. A unit that will not light, or that gives a code on its display, is tankless water heater territory. This page does not add a new measurement or a new price. If the tank is also wet on the floor, switch to water heater leaking. A leak and a cold shower can happen together when the tank has failed, and they can also be two separate fittings.
Combustion work, gas valves you are not sure about, and live electrical parts stay with the person who holds the license.
