In short
HomeAdvisor’s water heater repair guide, updated June 17, 2026, lists a national average of about $616, with most homeowners between $228 and $1,017. Gas repairs on that page run $150–$500. Electric repairs run $20–$300. A leaking tank is not the same visit as a dead pilot. None of these figures is a Sabino Creek price. Checked October 19, 2026.
Sort the symptom before you sort the price
Three complaints get mixed together. No hot water with a unit that still holds pressure is often a control, an element, a thermocouple, or a gas valve. Water on the floor may be a valve, a fitting, or a tank that has opened up. Noise — a pop, a rumble, a kettle sound — is often sediment, which in this valley is the hard-water story on hard water. Write which of the three you have. “It is broken” does not tell a contractor whether to bring a thermocouple or to plan a replacement.
| What you notice | What it might be | HomeAdvisor’s related figure |
|---|---|---|
| No hot water, gas unit, no gas smell | Pilot, thermocouple, or gas control | Pilot assessment $50–$150. Thermocouple around $150. Gas valve about $350. |
| No hot water, electric unit | Tripped breaker, element, or thermostat | Electric repairs $20–$300. Element replacement $200–$300. Thermostat $150–$200. |
| Water at the base | Valve, relief pipe, or a tank leak | Pressure-relief valve $20–$200. A split tank is a replacement conversation, not this row. |
| Popping or rumbling | Sediment in a tank | Flushing is listed around $200 on the repair guide. |
| Rusty or metallic water | Anode, dip tube, or a tank that is giving up | Anode rod $50–$150. Dip tube $25–$175. |
The dollar column is HomeAdvisor’s repair guide, updated June 17, 2026, including labor where that page says so. Tank repairs as a group are listed at $150–$700. The “might be” column is a sorting aid. It is not a diagnosis. A contractor confirms it on site.
Gas and electric are different machines
A gas heater has a burner, a vent, and a flue. An electric heater has elements and thermostats and usually no flue. Resetting a tripped breaker once is a homeowner step. If it trips again, leave it off and say so. HomeAdvisor says do-it-yourself repair is generally a poor idea because gas, electricity, and scalding water are all in play. We agree with the caution and we are not the repairer. A gas smell, a rolled-out flame, or a carbon monoxide alarm is not a reset. Leave and call 911 or Southwest Gas. The furnace page uses the same rule, and the longer note is carbon monoxide safety. If the air is cold and the showers are fine, the appliance is the heater, not this page: furnace repair.
When the repair guide starts talking about replacement
That repair guide says conventional tanks last about 10–15 years and that replacement, on the repair article, runs $875–$1,800. The dedicated replacement guide, updated on the same date, lists a normal range of $882–$1,826 and a tank life of 6–15 years. Both are HomeAdvisor. We are not averaging them into a third number. If the tank is in that age band and the failure is the tank itself, read water heater replacement and say “replacement quote” or “water heater” on the form so the callback matches the job. A tankless repair is not in the small gas-repair row. The replacement guide lists tankless repairs at $100–$1,300, against $100–$500 for a tank repair. The tankless install range is on tankless water heaters.
HomeAdvisor also says a professional service at least once a year — flush, relief valve, elements — and that a maintained heater can last up to 15 years. ContractorBear’s Tucson article says hard water shortens that life locally. Maintenance is the contractor’s visit, not a Sabino Creek membership. We do not sell a plan, and we do not publish a club price.
What the form is for
Choose Water heater. Name the fuel if you know it, say whether any hot water remains, and say if water is reaching the floor. “System down now” means you want the request treated as urgent. It does not put a plumber in the driveway, and it is not a night number. If water is actively spreading, the shutoff steps are on the emergency plumber guide.
