Clogged AC Drain Line in Tucson

The small line that leaves the air handler is how the system throws away the water it pulls from the air. When it clogs, the pan fills.

The condensate line is the skinny drain for the air conditioner, not the pipe under the tub. Cooling pulls moisture out of desert air, especially in the weeks when monsoon humidity sits on the valley, and that water has to leave. Algae likes the trap. Dust from a storm likes it too. When the line slows, the pan rises, a float switch may shut the system off, and if the switch fails you get the ceiling stain described on AC leaking water. This page is the narrower question: the line itself is clogged, and someone is about to attack it with the wrong tool.

Terminations vary. On a lot of single-story houses the line comes out through the stucco near the outdoor unit and drips on the gravel. On a two-story house it may run to a roof jack or a remote corner you only notice because of a green streak. Some builders tied it into a laundry or bath trap, which is legal plumbing in some plans and a surprise in others. If you cannot point to the end of the line, do not pour bleach, vinegar, or a drain chemical into the first hole you find. You may be looking at a gas vent, a roof drain, or an overflow that was never meant to be filled from the top.

A shop vacuum on the outside end can pull a soft clog out, if you have found the right end and the pan indoors is not already overflowing into drywall. Vacuuming or blowing from the air-handler end, into a full pan, drives water into the blower cabinet. That mess is worse than the clog. We do not cable this line. A sewer cable is the wrong diameter and the wrong job. Plumbing clogs stay on drain cleaning.

There is no HomeAdvisor line item we will pretend is “the price to clear a condensate drain.” The AC repair table says condensate water is quoted after diagnosis. See AC repair. If the system froze and then dumped a pan all at once, the clog may be a result of the thaw rather than the cause. Read AC freezing up before you assume algae. Dust that mats a coil and then washes into the pan is part of monsoon dust.

Sabino Creek will not be on the roof with a vacuum. The company is a referral service without a contractor license. Share the request if you want a contractor to take it. The person who does the work owns the estimate.

Questions about a clogged AC drain

Where the line goes, and why a plumbing snake is the wrong tool.

Where does the AC drain usually end?

Often outside near the condenser, at a roof termination, or into a plumbing trap the builder tied it to. If you are not sure, do not pour chemicals down a hole you cannot identify.

Can I vacuum the line?

A wet vacuum on the outside end, with the indoor pan protected, is a step some people take. Vacuuming into the air handler, or blowing toward a full pan, pushes water into the cabinet and the ceiling. If you are unsure which end is which, leave it.

Is this the same as a clogged tub?

No. Bath, kitchen, and sewer lines are plumbing. The condensate line carries distilled water and algae from the coil. A cable meant for a sewer can damage this smaller line.

Does Sabino Creek clear condensate lines?

No. We do not cable the line and we do not perform the work. The form may be shared with an independent contractor.
