Frozen Pipes in Tucson

Tucson winters are mild until a night drops below freezing and an exposed pipe is the one that notices. This page is that week, not a northern deep-freeze manual. If a pipe has already opened, shut the water off. The repair ranges are HomeAdvisor’s. We do not thaw pipes.

Request a callback

Tell us what’s going on. We follow up by phone or email. Street address can wait. Sending this form is a request for a callback, not an appointment, and not a promise that a contractor is already on the way.

See our Privacy Policy and Terms. The TEP box is the heating-and-cooling question used on the rest of this site. Checking it does not create a plumbing rebate.

In short

ContractorBear’s March 2026 Tucson article calls November through February a freeze-concern season, because winter nights drop below freezing more often than people expect, with pipe bursts described into December through February. HomeAdvisor’s burst-pipe guide, updated June 20, 2026, lists repair at $200–$3,000, average about $500. Thawing is a flat fee around $100 on that page. An emergency call-out is $100–$300. None of that is a Sabino Creek price. The form is a callback, and a licensed contractor sets any visit. Checked October 19, 2026.

Why this page exists in a desert city

People move here from hotter assumptions. A hose bib on a north wall, a washing-machine line in an unheated garage, or a vacant house with the heat left off can still freeze on a clear night. ContractorBear is the source for the season: November–February as the freeze-concern window, and the observation that nights go below freezing more often than the city’s reputation suggests. We are not adding a temperature record they did not print, and we are not claiming a number of emergency calls.

The same night is often when the furnace or heat pump is asked to work for the first time since spring. That visit is before the first cold night. A house that was empty for months has both problems at once: snowbird startup for the heating equipment, and this page if a faucet is dry or a ceiling is wet. Say which one you are looking at.

If the pipe has already opened

HomeAdvisor’s burst-pipe guide, updated June 20, 2026, tells you to shut off the main water supply, open faucets so the lines drain, and shut off electricity in the wet area if you can do it safely. Then call a plumber. A hardware-store repair kit, listed around $25 on that page, is a temporary wrap while you wait, not a finished repair. We are a referral, so the “call a plumber” step is the form, after the water is off. If you smell gas near a heater that also froze, leave and call 911 or Southwest Gas. Do not hunt for the leak with the lights.

What HomeAdvisor lists for the repair

Labor is most of the bill. HomeAdvisor says nearly 80 percent of an average $500 repair is labor, with plumbers at $45–$200 per hour, or a flat fee of $100–$1,250, plus a possible trip fee of $50–$300. Thawing frozen pipes is listed as a flat fee around $100. If you want someone immediately and cannot make a temporary stop, an emergency call-out may add $100–$300. That add-on is not a promise that anyone is available at 2 a.m. This site does not claim overnight coverage.

Location or typeHomeAdvisor average cost, including labor
Any burst, normal range$200–$3,000 (about $500 average)
Kitchen or inside a wall$150–$500
Bathroom$150–$800
Basement$200–$600
Main line$150–$2,000 (about $1,080 average)
Sewer pipe that burst$1,300–$4,700 (about $2,250 average)

Material, before labor, is a small part of that. HomeAdvisor lists PVC at $0.50–$8 per foot, copper at $2–$15, and cast iron at $10–$30, and says that once labor is included a badly corroded run can land around $150–$250 per foot. A house built before 1986 may still have older pipe. We will not tell you from a ZIP code which material you have.

Prevention HomeAdvisor actually printed

On that guide, the prevention list is: keep the thermostat at least at 55°F when you are away, let a faucet run so water moves, open cabinet doors on exterior walls so room air reaches the pipes, and use heat tape where a pipe is exposed. Those are national tips from HomeAdvisor, not a Tucson building code we are quoting. They matter most in a house that will sit empty through a cold snap. The heating side of leaving a house is the snowbird page. The plumbing side is whether the water is off or the heat is high enough that an exposed line does not freeze.

A leak that shows up with no cold night behind it — a warm floor, a bill that climbed in summer — is not this page. That is slab leak detection or an ordinary supply leak. A water heater that itself froze is uncommon indoors. HomeAdvisor’s replacement guide says a heater can freeze if it is exposed, and that outdoor units need freeze protection. If your heater is in an open carport, say so.

Frozen pipe questions

Do pipes freeze in Tucson?

ContractorBear’s March 2026 article says November through February is a freeze-concern season and that winter nights drop below freezing more often than people expect. We are citing that article. We are not publishing a count of burst pipes.

How much does a burst pipe cost to repair?

HomeAdvisor’s burst-pipe guide, updated June 20, 2026, lists $200–$3,000, average about $500. Thawing is listed as a flat fee around $100. An emergency call-out on that page is $100–$300. National figures, not our price.

What should I do if water is already leaking?

HomeAdvisor’s guide says shut off the main water, open faucets to drain the lines, and shut off power in the wet area if you can do that safely. Then contact a plumber. The form is the referral step, after the water is off.

How does a freeze request get answered?

The form is a callback request. Shut the main off if water is leaking. A licensed contractor sets any visit after they contact you. Sabino Creek does not staff an overnight desk. Shutting the water off is the step that limits damage while you wait.

A faucet is dry after a cold night, or a pipe split?

If water is running, shut the main off first. Then send the form. The callback is not a promise that someone arrives overnight.
